Our Work

We help you communicate complex data and ideas clearly, simply and compellingly to catalyse impactful change.

Our work mapped to the Sustainable Development Goals

Using research funding from the South African Water Research Communication, we were commissioned in 2025 by a development economist at Stellenbosch University to assist with the design and quality control of an information intervention on water quality in two townships close to Grabouw, Siyayanzela and Khutsong. We were responsible for co-creating the intervention design with Prof Marisa von Fintel and developed a film script which was turned into a film by Reel Epic Productions. Beam acted as the insights intermediary, helping to ensure overall quality of the intervention design in the film and messaging. As part of intervention design, focus group discussions were conducted pre- and post-film development and Beam was onsite during shooting day to ensure integrity of the behavioural economics approach.

Beam was commissioned in 2024 by Shoprite’s communication division to assist with the development of a statistically rigorous South African Food Security index that tracks the state of food security in South Africa since 2002. While 2024’s index was an introduction of the index, in 2025 the food security index’s report took a deep dive into dietary diversity in South Africa. The Food Security Index 2024 report, including a placemat infographic, can be accessed here by clicking on the information icon.

In 2025, Beam was commissioned by HE2RO, the Wits Health Epidemiology and Research Office, to develop a website to serve as research repository for a data linkage project with legs, South Africa’s National Laboratory Cohorts Collaboration. Beam was responsible for acting as interlocuter between the Wits group of researchers and the design and web development company, Nudge Studio.

Beam was responsible for identifying and extracting the relevant data-stories from a research project on socio-emotional skills development in early childhood development in South Africa. The project included strategic story identification, the development of a simple infographic to communicate key insights and messages, as well as the development of four visuals to support research insight storytelling. The client was Dr Heleen Hofmeyr at Stellenbosch University.

We were commissioned by Cenfri to provide an in-person workshop on visual storytelling. We highlighted the importance of designing with the audience in mind and the five core design principles to encourage behavioural change or action.

In 2025, we were tasked to provide the layout and graphic design of The Global Association of Applied Behavioural Scientists' (GAABS's) first published research report. To read the report, click on the information icon.

We collaborated on projects related to the South African Just Energy Transition Implementation Plan (JET IP) and support financial strategy formulation, -structuring and -feasibility assessments.

We designed a placement infographic to share the key findings of an Economic Research of Southern Africa (ERSA) working paper on turnover among businesses and jobs in South Africa.
